Pau d'Arco Candida Treatment

Often recommended by herbalists to treat fungal, bacterial and even parasitic infections, Pau d'Arco treatments cover a wide range of ailments. Chief within these categories is the Candida Albicans fungus, an overgrowth of which causes candidiasis, also known as a yeast infection.

Initial research showed that Lapachol, a compound in Pau d'Arco, worked effectively as both an anti-fungal and anti-viral. Continued research has shown this to be accurate, however, also has also concluded that unrefined Pau d'Arco is even more effective than its Lapachol compound alone. From this we can reach the conclusion that other compounds within Pau d'Arco, or a combination of its compounds, makes the most effective treatment against fungi and viruses.

Beta lapachone and quercetin have also been shown as effective anti-fungals, and it is theorized that beta-lapachone may inhibit certain enzymes required by viruses to grow and propagate. "If that's the case, having more beta-lapachone in our bodies would be an effective way to block viruses" was theorized by Debra Gibson, N.D. (naturopathic doctor), from Woodbury, Connecticut.

Candida overgrowth can be caused by many factors, including a weak immune system, diabetes, a poor diet or diet rich in sugars and carbohydrates, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and steroids, as well as others. Candida problems can occur in or on the mouth (thrush), respiratory system, skin, or vagina, and may cause symptoms throughout the entire body.

No firm evidence from research has been provided as to what within Pau d'Arco is lethal to fungus, but the fact remains that it is efficient and effective at killing off Candida Albicans fungus. Many doctors recommend making use of Pau d'Arco when on an antibiotic regimen, as a precaution against candida infections. Pau d'Arco is also frequently recommended for women who are the victims of recurring yeast infections.
